Statement from Secretary McDonough on Findings of the Lethal Injection Commission

“I both welcome and appreciate the Commission’s report. I believe its intent, as well as its impact, is to help us achieve the highest possible standards. The taking of human life under direction of the law is both a difficult and solemn duty. We must do it with great humanity and profound dignity.

We will review the report and adopt from it every recommendation that enables us to achieve the professionalism we seek, insofar as those recommendations are in compliance with the authorities of the Governor, the legislature, and the judiciary. Moreover, this Department will take the internal steps that doubly ensure unity of command, continual training, and strict adherence to procedure in the carrying out of court-ordered executions. We approach this effort with deep recognition of the enormity of the responsibilities entailed. I thank the Commission for its dedication to that end.”

James R. McDonough
Secretary
