While I am highly encouraged by the N.C. Medical Board's taking a position on physician participation in state-sponsored executions, it is clear that those who support the death penalty will now want to use nurses and physician assistants to carry out the lethal injection process.
Are nurses not also bound by the principles of the Hippocratic Oath?
Is not assistance in carrying out lethal injection executions in direct conflict with those principles?
Organizations like the N.C. Nurses Association and the Board of Nursing are in a position to play a pivotal role in helping stop state-sponsored killing.
I urge them to actively and decisively oppose participation by nurses in executions.
