Timberlake now says a co-defendent, Tom McElroy, shot Indiana State Police Master Trooper Michael E. Greene, 43, during a 1993 traffic stop in Indianapolis. A jury convicted Timberlake and sentenced him to death.
Timberlake said he sat on the hood of a car while McElroy spoke to Greene. "Then I heard a scuffle and a pop," he said. "If I was 10 feet away when it happened, I can't help nothing."
McElroy received a time-served sentence for his involvement and has died.
Several of the five-member Parole Board members voiced skepticism and asked questions such as why Timberlake later grabbed the gun used in the murder; he said he was scared McElroy would harm him. Timberlake never testified during his trial, and prosecutors said he shot Greene when the trooper tried to handcuff McElroy.
The board won't vote until Jan. 16 on its recommendation to Gov. Mitch Daniels, who makes decisions on whether to grant clemency. The board will meet earlier that day in Indianapolis to hear testimony from Greene's family and arguments from attorneys on both sides.
Today, Greene's family and several officers from the Indiana State Police watched a live video feed in Indianapolis.
Timberlake "has always tried to blame it on someone else and won't take responsibility for his actions," said Shannon Davis, 35, Greene's daughter. She had not seen Timberlake since the trial.
Timberlake's execution is scheduled just after midnight Jan. 19.
