Nuns Oppose Proposed Child Predator Law
KSAT News
SAN ANTONIO -- Some local nuns said they're against a proposed child
predator law because they believe it would harm children instead of protect
them.
If passed, Jessica's law would allow authorities to sentence repeat child
predators with the death penalty.
Nuns from the Leadership Council of Religious Women said they don't want it
passed because they believe the law could lead predators to kill their young
victim to keep them from testifying.
The nuns said they're pushing for a solution that doesn't include the death
penalty.
"We know that there are other means other than the death penalty that can be
used to accomplish this end," Sister Elizabeth Riebschlaeger. "So, we would
support any measure that does this."
The Texas House of Representative passed a version of Jessica's law in
March.
