NEW YORK MARATHON, RUNNING FOR A MORATORIUM ON CAPITAL EXECUTIONS

Hands Off Cain - / MaximsNews Network / - 31 October 2007

On November 4th , the Olympic Champion, Stefano Baldini will run at the New York Marathon with the ribbon representing the Italian commitment to stop capital executions worldwide.

Following the initiative of the NGO "Hands off Cain", the Italian Government and the European Union have brought together a coalition of States representing all continents to present at the United Nations General Assembly a resolution supporting a universal moratorium on capital executions thereby reaching an important and historical moment for all humankind.

Taking this initiative forward will also be all the Italian participants to the marathon, who will run along the streets of New York. The tour operators Terra mia and EIS, the organizers of the Marathon of Turin, Marathon of Venice and Barilla, have offered their availability to raise awareness of the runners and to distribute information material.

Terra mia and EIS will distribute ribbons and patches to the 3000 Italian marathon runners arriving in New York with their organizations. The Turin marathon and the Venice marathon have made available their desks at the New York Marathon Expo (which will be open from Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd of November) in order to provide information and distribute documentation. Barilla will also be doing so at their famous pre-marathon pasta dinner, the big party being thrown for all marathon runners on the eve of the event (Saturday 3rd November afternoon, from 4.30 pm onwards at the Tavern on the green in Central Park).

We are sure that – with the support of all the other countries that are co-sponsoring the proposal for a resolution – the non-Italian marathon runners will also run with the ribbons and patches in support of the moratorium.
